B is for… Background Image

What is a Background Image – and how to add it!

The background photo appears above the top section of your profile. You can add a background image (or edit it) in your profile section. Please note: You can’t edit your background photo from a mobile device, but you can make changes from desktop. The image should be 1400 x 425 pixels. If you are using text in your background image, be sure to centre it and check that it has not been cut off.

What should you use…

LinkedIn combines the corporate identity and your personal identity. I do not personally utilise the Background Image. I still think of the Background Image as a ‘corporate’ identity feature and I am somewhat reluctant to personalise this too much.

However, for the right individual personalising their LinkedIn Background Image can improve their personal brand and help their profile standout. A great example is writers/authors – the right background image (usually tied in with their other social media profiles for consistency) can work very well.

  • create an image to bolster your brand and personal identity;
  • keep it consistent with your other social media sites, but keep it professional;
  • use colour to make an impact; and
  • keep it simple.
