Balancing Networking and the Day Job

Unless you specifically work in a business development role, it is likely that you have a main job which requires you to balance networking and business development with your day job. Balancing networking and the day job can be a challenge, particularly when you are busy and particularly when we have gone so long with limited networking (or primarily virtual networking) and we are transitioning back to more in-person networking, and hybrid networking. Here are some tips for balancing your networking with the day job:

  1. Set clear goals: Before you start networking, it’s important to have a clear understanding of what you hope to accomplish. This will help you focus your efforts and prioritize your time. As part of this also look at your networking groups and activities with a critical eye to make sure you are getting the most of what you are doing.
  2. Set boundaries: Make sure to set boundaries and establish clear guidelines for when you will and will not be available for networking. This can help you balance your work and networking commitments and avoid feeling overwhelmed. For example, networking events tend to happen mid-week so I tend to keep these evening free for networking. I also tend to have more work meetings over lunchtime, which means that I do less lunchtime networking events these days.
  3. Make use of available resources: There are many tools and resources available that can help you manage your time and stay organized. Consider using a networking planner, time management app or scheduling tool to help you stay on track and prioritize your meetings and tasks.
  4. Take breaks: It’s important to take breaks and give yourself time to rest and recharge. Make sure to build in time for self-care and relaxation to help you stay energized and focused. It is important not to overstretch yourself otherwise you will be too tired and burnt out to actually engage and network effectively and too tired to work.
  5. Seek support: Don’t be afraid to seek support from others if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Consider talking to a mentor or trusted colleague for guidance and support.

By following these tips, you can effectively balance networking and the day job and make the most of your time.
