Conversation Starters: Sports

networking tips for beginners - conversation starters

If you are not a natural at making conversation, then thinking of conversation topics when first start talking to someone can make you nervous.

While it is good to find other topics (more interesting) topics of conversation to move on to having good small talk topics up your sleeve will help break the ice and help you find those more interesting topics of conversation. It will also help relieve some of the anxiety of walking into an unknown environment and meeting new people. Alternatively, if you are networking online, having some conversation starters in your back pocket can make it easier to make conversation.

Sports can be an easy conversation starter. However, some people could talk about sports all day, others would rather talk about anything but and there are the others that can engage in a conversation about sport, but do not find it particularly interesting or engaging. However, an engaged, passionate conversation about sports between the right people can really strengthen relationships.

However, just remember these couple of rules. Firstly, if you are in a group of more than two people, make sure everyone is a sports fan. You don’t want to exclude someone from participating in the conversation.

Secondly, while an engaged and enthusiastic conversation is fun, a heated one won’t help you. If you or someone else in the conversation starts getting riled up, change the topic and move on.
