NTFB Blog Posts - winning work

how do you demonstrate that you have the potential to win work?

Ideally, you need to have a track record of winning work.

Keep track of all the work that you have won (no matter how small) because everyone has to start somewhere. If you are not winning work, have a think about how you can position yourself better to get opportunities. Are you too busy? Do you not get put in front of the right people? Do you lack some crucial skills?

All of these things are fixable if you can identify them and then ask for help/support.

If you are not winning work at the moment you need to be showing that you have the potential to win work and that you would be good at it. For example, showing an interest in business development and being active in business development activities can go a long way to demonstrating this potential.

For most people, Professional Networking will be part of their business development initiatives.

This is an another reason why it is important to have a networking strategy – so that you can provide the evidence of where you have won work (or have the potential to win work) or made an appropriate introduction etc.

You should start your networking efforts early (you can’t start early enough). Your networking activities should be incremental and sustainable. The people who go far using networking as a way to demonstrate their potential network regularly – they engage in networking activities daily/every week no matter how busy they are in small doses. It is very rare that you will reap the rewards straightaway which is why it is important to keep at it. As this is the only way it keeps paying dividends.
