networking tips for beginners - internal networking

If you are an introvert or simply don’t do well at large social functions, the office holiday party can be a nightmare. The holiday season, full of socials and functions can be draining/exhausting and can make those of you who are shy these functions can also make you anxious or nervous.

However, people are often judged on whether they attend holiday functions and therefore simply turning up can be good for your career and actively participating and networking can be even better.

Therefore we recommend that you fight the urge to avoid these holiday parties (particularly your own office holiday party).

Here are some quick tips to help ensure that you survive your next office holiday party (as it is worth persevering):

01. Think Positively

It’s easy to focus on all the reasons you don’t want to attend a party. Instead, focus on the positives. Write down your list of positives so that you can revisit this if you feel anxious.

02. Travel with a Colleague

Arrange to travel to the event or arrive with a trusted colleague. A familar face can help you feel more comfortable and they can also be networking buddy.

It is less intimidating to join a conversation in progress when you approach a group with a more outgoing sidekick. Even if they are not overly out-going they can provide the support and confidence that you need to push your elf and a fall back if you need some downtime. Your friend may even be able to introduce you to colleagues they know who you might not have met yet.

03. Smile

As well as thinking positively, it is important to also have positive body language. Smile and make eye contact to encourage others to engage with you and strike up a conversation. Smiling is a simple way to let people know that you are open to conversation.

04. Take Breaks

While it may be tempting to rush to the bar when your introversion or shyness starts kicking in and you need a break. However, you should consider heading to the bathroom or a quiet nook instead. A trip to the bathroom can provide you with a much-needed break allowing you to recharge before reemerging while giving you some peace and quiet.

05. Be a Good Listener

Remember you don’t need to talk all the time, just come armed with a few conversation starters and open questions and be ready to listen.

06. Have an Exit Strategy

Give yourself permission to leave early if you are not having fun or are feeling drained. Hopefully, when you get there you will end up having fun, but it can be useful to have an exit strategy as a back up in case it is needed.
