Internal Networking Tips for Part-Timers

networking tips for beginners - internal networking

As a part-timer, it is very easy to simply get into work and keep your head down. You may be keeping your head down to ensure that you get through work and to keep up your momentum. But do this all the time and your profile will suffer. After all, a visible profile is more than simply doing a good job. You need to keep yourself visible to your colleagues, your boss and the decision makers in the business.

Therefore it is important to make sure you make time for internal networking with your peers and colleagues.

Regularly Attend and Make Time for Internal Meetings and Catch-ups.

It is easy to get so busy that you can’t break away from your desk for what might seem like a missable meeting. However, internal meetings and catch-ups can be great for finding out what is going on in the business. It also gives other people an opportunity to find out what you are doing. If the company regularly holds meetings on your non-working day don’t be afraid to suggest an alternative time so that you can participate. This might be all the time or on occasion. Alternatively, if it is a meeting that cannot be scheduled around you, but it is good for profile-raising, consider switching your non-working days on that particular week.

If you don’t have these meetings Schedule your own.

If your business does not hold regular catch up or team meetings don’t be afraid of scheduling your own meetings at times that suit you. It doesn’t have to be anything formal it can be a simple coffee catchup – the key thing is to get it scheduled in.

Make the most of your Lunchtimes.

If you leave work early during the regular working week make sure that you maximise your lunchtimes instead. Have a regular lunch diarized with the key people that you need to keep in touch with and if possible schedule a regular team lunch. In my job, our team had a regular lunchtime calendar appointment each week and whoever was free would join in for lunch (with no pressure or obligation to do it each week).

This may sound easy, but it is also easy for time to pass so it is important to get this scheduled in!
