A to Z Challenge,  Remote Networking

L is for… Listen Actively

Active listening is important in any conversation, but it’s especially important when networking remotely. Make sure to give the other person your full attention and listen carefully to what they have to say.

Active listening involves fully engaging with and paying attention to the speaker, and it can help to build trust, strengthen relationships, and improve communication. Here are some tips for practicing active listening when networking remotely:

  1. Give the speaker your full attention: Make sure to remove distractions and give the speaker your full attention. This can include closing other tabs or programs on your computer and putting away your phone.
  2. Listen to understand, not to respond: When listening to the speaker, focus on understanding their perspective and message, rather than thinking about how you will respond. This can help to improve communication and build trust.
  3. Use nonverbal cues: Nonverbal cues such as nodding, maintaining eye contact, and leaning in can show the speaker that you are engaged and interested in what they have to say.
  4. Ask clarifying questions: If you’re not sure you understand something, don’t be afraid to ask clarifying questions. This can help to improve communication and ensure that you have a clear understanding of the speaker’s message.
  5. Reflect on what was said: After the conversation, take a moment to reflect on what was said and any takeaways you gained. This can help to solidify your understanding and show the speaker that you were paying attention.

By practicing active listening, you can effectively build trust and strengthen your professional relationships during networking.
