Networking for Students

NTFB Guide: Networking for Students Part II

It is never to early to start networking. If you are a student and haven’t already started practising your networking skills you should definitely be looking into getting involved in networking activities particularly if you are planning to go into a professional or business position after graduating.

Networking can be an important tool for students, as it allows you to build relationships with people in your field of study or career interests.

How to Prepare for Attending a Networking Event

Before you attend a networking event do some quick preparation to get more out of your networking event.

01. Do your research.

Research the other attendees and the companies that are attending the networking events you are going to. Make a few notes that you can use at the event so you know who you want to talk to and what you might like to talk to them about.

If you are attending a talk or seminar, also make some notes and ideas of questions you might like to ask the speakers.

02. Write an Elevator Speech

As well as preparing who you might like to speak to and what you might like to ask them, also polish your elevator speech. If you haven’t already got one – why not prepare a small opening statement that you can use when introducing yourself.

For example, as a student, you could state your name, where and what you are studying and what aspirations you have for the future.

03. Invest in smart work attire.

If you haven’t already purchased a smart suit or office wear, it would be wise to do so before you attend your networking events. First impressions do count. If you are smartly dressed, you are more likely to make a good impression. It is also the case that if you are dressed appropriately, you will typically act in a more professional manner.

04. Ensure you have created an up-to-date LinkedIn profile.

Make sure that you have set up a LinkedIn Profile. This is perhaps one of the most important ways to prepare for a networking event, as it can be used as an effective tool for connecting with those you meet afterwards. Your profile should be an accurate reflection of your professional and educational achievements so far.
