Quick Tip: Get to know the Gatekeepers
Take some time in your networking strategy to identify and get to know the “gatekeepers”. This will mean something different to everyone, but let’s use an example. If I am talking about networking it might be the event organisers or managers that are the gate-keepers. They have the contacts and will usually know the majority of people attending an event and usually also control the invite list. If you want on that list, and what to tap into their knowledge then this gatekeeper is someone you will be wanting to get to know and wanting to build a relationship with.
Another example might be journalists, editors or publishers if you are looking to promote your visibility through content.
Start by identifying the gatekeepers you need to get to know as part of your personal strategy. (This might be online this might in IRL). Once identified see if you can get a genuine introduction through a contact. If not, reach out to them anyway in a professional manner. If you are not ready to take the direct approach yet you may just wish to follow them on social media and keep them gently on your radar and start with a few simple online interactions.
