As well as being a social necessity, good use of small talk can also help you get through the informal conversation and help you move on to develop stronger and more meaningful relationships with others.

Like many soft skills, the key to getting better at small talk and conversations is to practice and just go out and do it and it will get better. Watch and listen to what other people do and what experienced and confident networkers do. What can you learn from them?

If you get stuck here are some things that will help you make small talk in any situation.

  • Ask open-ended questions. Open-ended questions generate an interesting, dynamic conversation and encourage the person you’re speaking with to open up.
  • Use Active Listening. Focus and pay attention. Really listen and be interested in the person you are speaking with. This will also make it easier to ask relevant questions and keep the conversation going.
  • Be Enthusiastic. Engage in conversation in a positive manner. Look to have a fun engaging conversation with someone and learn more about others. Having a positive attitude and an open mind can help you have better conversations.
  • Invite someone else into the conversation or encourage them to talk. Be open to talking and engaging with others.

Action Point: Practice. Set your self a goal of 50 small talk conversations. Keep track of it and see what works and what doesn’t work.

WFH Action Point: Working from Home will still present many small talk opportunities such as on the phone or video calls. Practice engaging in small talk in these scenarios as well.
