T is for… Theme

NTFB Blog Posts - a to z - instagram

The popular Instagram feeds and those with strong engagement have a cohesive brand. A strong consistent look and feel to their feed content and overall brand. Part of this might be that they have an overarching theme for their Instagram presence. A strong theme means strong engagement and more potential opportunities for networking.

Think of 3-5 words that describe how you want your brand/image to appear to others (if you haven’t already done so). Alternatively, choose a couple of topics/subjects that represent you, your brand, your business and concentrate on these to start developing your theme. Your content (and your captions) should reflect your theme.

Think about the photographs that you enjoy taking. You want to enjoy creating your Instagram feed so make sure that this is tied into your theme in some way. Also, think about how you can make your photographs look cohesive – edit your photographs in the same way, use the same colour palette etc.

I had seen stats that suggest that images with a single dominant colour receive 17% more like than those with multiple striking colours. That increases another 24% if the dominant colour is a cool tone such as blue, grey or teal. Filtered images are also 45% more likely yo receive comments, with warmer filters getting better results. Additionally, photographs featuring at least one face attracts approx 35% more likes per follower.

Remember: you don’t have to have it all worked out at the start – your theme can grow and develop as you do.
