Using internal networking to improve your profile

Being visible is an important aspect of networking and building your professional reputation. It’s not enough to simply do a good job – you need to actively put yourself out there and make your presence known. No matter how busy you are make sure you allocate some of your time to networking internally (and externally), whether this is by stopping by a few people for a chat, or planning to meet colleagues for lunch.

Here are some things that you can do to improve your profile internally within your company/organisation:

01. Volunteer for new projects or initiatives

One of the best ways to expand your internal (and external) network is to volunteer for high profile or cross-departmental assignments/projects. There are normally ways for you to contribute to your organisation. For example this might include being on a social or DEI committee, writing articles for newsletter or intranet, organising charity or CSR initiatives. If you want to grow your profile you need to be prepared to put your hand up and volunteer for stuff outside of your normal day to day workload.

02. Talk and Ask Questions of Senior Management

Who is is important to know? Who will make decisions about your career later down the line? Don’t wait until promotion season is upon you. Invest the time to speak to your Boss, Board and Senior Management – don’t let your promotion application be the first time that they hear your name. Be honest, challenge and ask difficult questions.

03. Use your lunchtimes (and mealtimes generally)

Make sure you use your lunchtimes effectively. Lunch breaks are the perfect time to expand and maintain your network. Make sure you don’t just take a break, but make sure you use it to have lunch with someone. Mix up who you have lunch with, or start a lunchtime activity such as a book club or running club to allow you to network and connection with colleagues over a common interest.

04. Attend Social Events

It is important for your internal profile to turn up to your company social events such as informal drinks after work or a more formal Christmas or summer party. Remember, even if you hate this type of event, it is important to show up (you don’t have to stay all night).

05. Attend Meetings

Meetings can be a time drain, however, when meetings are effective, they can help you raise your internal profile. Whether it is showcasing your knowledge or expertise, or even your skill in running a meeting, it can make the right impression on the relevant people in your network.

06. Be Positive and Enthusiastic

It is important to have a positive and enthusiastic approach to your work and organisation. You want to be the person that people want to talk to, and/or come to you for advice etc. If you are positive and enthusiastic, people will want to spend time with you and are more likely to come to you when they need help and support.

07. Seek out Speaking and other PR Opportunities

External (and internal) Speaking and PR opportunities can be a great way to raise your profile internally. Whether this is being speaking on your niche topic, being nominated for an award, writing an article or be quoted in an industry press – it can really grow your profile.

08. Get involved in company-wide initiatives

Consider getting involved in company-wide initiatives, such as volunteering programs or community events. This can be a great way to demonstrate your commitment to the organisation and to build relationships with co-workers across different departments.

09. Use social media

Consider using social media platforms like LinkedIn to share your work and ideas with your colleagues. This can be a great way to build your professional presence and connect with others within your organisation.

10. Participate in team-building activities

Consider participating in team-building activities and events that will allow you to interact with coworkers outside of your immediate team. This can be a great way to build relationships and get to know your colleagues better.
