Why you need a business card even if you are still a student

If you are a business professional, it is likely that you will have your own business cards. But what if you are a student or an entrepreneur just starting out? Well, it is never too early to start your personal branding and getting your name out there.

So why should you have a business card?

1. It is the easiest way to swap information

Professionals use business cards, because it is an easy way to exchange information. Chances are if you meet someone worth meeting and you build a rapport – they are likely to ask you for a business card. You do not want to be in a position where you have to apologise and say no. Of course you can always ask for theirs instead or use a connection card. However, if you are attending a lot of events – get some business cards made up so that you can easily exchange information.

2. You will stand out

While it makes perfect sense for students to have business cards, a lot of them don’t. By having your own business cards and promoting yourself you will already be a step ahead and more memorable that students that do not have their own business cards.

3. You will be taken seriously

If you are acting professional, others will treat you in a professional manner and take you seriously. They may give more serious thought to the discussion you had at the event and follow-up.

but what are the alternatives?

There are two alternatives that I frequently use (usually when I find myself without a business card) – connecting there and then on LinkedIn using the mobile app (This is not always appropriate and should be used with caution) or using a Connection Card instead (or fumbling around looking for a scrap piece of paper if you prefer).
