Your Networking Problems – Solved! #4: ‘‘I find it hard to approach someone new’’

If you are an introvert it can be hard approaching someone new. This is one of the reasons why it is good to have a networking buddy. However, if you don’t have a networking buddy you have just got to remember that everyone is at a networking event because they want to meet new people.

There are a couple of techniques that I use for easing into conversations will little effort. The first is I always try to arrive early. This means that I can catch people and engage in conversation before people to too far into conversations or already met up with people they know and are still in an open to networking mode. Also there are often a few other people who don’t have anyone to talk to early on who are equally grateful to have someone to chat to. Secondly, I try to have a key conversation starter ready to get me going, I like to pick something about the speaker or event that might have wider interest.

Otherwise you just have to get your mind-set ready to approach someone new. Here are a few tips for approaching someone new:

  • Start with a friendly greeting: A simple hello or wave can be a good way to initiate contact and show that you are approachable.
  • Introduce yourself: Offer your name and a brief introduction, such as your job title or area of interest.
  • Make eye contact: Make eye contact and smile to show that you are friendly and interested in talking.
  • Ask a question or make a comment: Use a conversation starter to initiate a conversation. This could be a question about the person’s work or interests, or a comment on something you have in common.
  • Be respectful and open-minded: Remember to be respectful and open-minded in your interactions with others. Avoid making assumptions or jumping to conclusions, and try to listen actively and show genuine interest in the other person.

By following these tips, you can approach someone new in a friendly and respectful way and start a conversation that can lead to a new connection or relationship.
