Z is for… Zzzz
Z is for ZZZ
Social Media can be noisy. Noise can be a distraction. So how can you get back a little bit of control and make it less noisy? One easy way to do this is by using mute funtions and silencing the noise. Other options might be making the content you want more accessible.
Here are some things you can do:
While I love twitter there is a lot of content out there. Some accounts post lots of content to the extent that they can be quite spammy, while other accounts that I really want to read/see get lost in the noise or just don’t happen to be tweeting when I am online. Out of all the social media platforms, twitter is probably the one I seek to control to my preferences the most.
- Use mute – Mute is a feature that allows you to remove an account’s Tweets from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking that account. Read How to Mute Accounts on Twitter to find out more.
- Use notifications. If there are key accounts you don’t want to miss out on, why not set up notifications for a small select few, particularly if these do not tweet that regularly.
- Use Twitter lists to enable you to focus on the content you want, when you want to.
- Use a filtering service. Read: 20 ways to filter your Tweets
With facebook I often just rely on notifications and using the preferences correctly. Primarily because I personally mainly hang out in facebook groups and on facebook pages when I am on facebook (rather than in the newsfeed).
- Adjust your preferences to make sure they reflect what you want.
- Use mute. You can mute friends and pages so that you are more in control of your newsfeed. Here are 5 ways to mute someone on facebook.
- Use friends lists.
LinkedIn can be a great platform for engaging in conversation, however, sometimes a particular post or chain of messages is no longer relevant or grows beyond your expectations and you need to get in control of the notifications and messages on the platform.
- Adjust your preferences and customise your feed.
- Use mute to get control of your messages. Read: Muting (and unmuting) a message conversation
- Use follow function to control content in your newsfeed. Read: Following and Unfollowing People Companies and Topics and Follow and Unfollow from Published Articles
Finally Instagram. Instagram you can’t really “mute”. It would be easier to unfollow.
- However there are third party solutions available that will help if you feel like a mute function is required.
- Instagram Stories on the otherhand can be muted.
